Self-acceptance: the key to transformation?
How do you talk to yourself when you want to change? Are you kind to yourself? Or, like many of us, do you talk to yourself in “shoulds”? … “I should do this, I should do that”? Followed by the disappointed and judgemental, “I should have done this, I should have done that”. It’s enough to make anyone feel defeated.
Today, I want to talk about something that might just be the key to unlocking the doors of transformation: self-acceptance and self-compassion.
Carl Rogers once beautifully said,
"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."
Self-acceptance involves giving yourself permission to love yourself exactly as you are, flaws and all, and realising it’s perfectly okay.
Kristen Neff, a pioneer in the field of self-compassion, emphasizes the importance of treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a good friend. When we wrap ourselves in the warm blanket of self-compassion, suddenly the journey towards growth and evolution doesn't seem so daunting.
Think of it this way: when we're constantly at war with ourselves, how can we muster the strength to embark on a journey of transformation? Self-acceptance and self-compassion lay down the foundation for meaningful change.
