New Steps

Starting therapy can feel like a big step into the unknown. If you're considering therapy for the first time, or you've already booked your first session, welcome! Here are some tips to help you prepare and make the most of your therapeutic journey.

1. Set Clear Goals: Think about what you want to achieve from therapy. It doesn't have to be detailed or specific, but having a general idea of your goals can guide the sessions and give you a sense of direction.

2. Be Open: Therapy works best when you're honest and open. It can take some time to feel fully comfortable, and you may take all the time you need, but do remember that your therapist is there to support you, not judge you.

3. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about the therapy process, confidentiality, session duration, or anything else you're curious about. Understanding the framework can ease a lot of anxiety.

4. Keep an Open Mind: Sometimes therapy can be challenging, pushing you a little out of your comfort zone. That’s a normal part of the process, and it’s often where the greatest growth happens.

5. Take Notes: After each session, take a few minutes to jot down any insights, feelings, or thoughts that came up. This can be a wonderful tool for reflection and seeing how far you’ve come.

6. Commit to the Process: Personal change takes time and patience. Regular sessions and a commitment to apply what you learn outside of therapy will foster the best results.

7. Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself—body, mind, and spirit. It’s especially important on the tougher days.

Deciding to start counselling is a powerful step towards better understanding yourself and enhancing your overall well-being. It’s completely normal to have mixed feelings about it. Remember, every small step is a part of your progress.
