Integrative Therapy: A tailored approach

If you’ve been reading through my website, or that of other health professionals, you may have wondered what certain words and phrases mean; phrases like “integrative therapy”, or “evidence-based therapeutic modalities”. Well, today I’d like to talk about just this, and how it relates to the style of counselling I offer at Branch of Hope.

Person-centred Therapy

In terms of therapeutic approaches, person-centred therapy serves as the foundation of all counselling offered at Branch of Hope. Developed by Carl Rogers, this modality emphasizes three core conditions: empathy, congruence (authenticity), and unconditional positive regard. These principles create a supportive and empathetic environment, enabling you to feel truly seen and heard. Central to person-centred therapy is the recognition that you are the expert on your own life, and that in the right conditions, you have the inner resources to make the changes you wish to see in your life. In our sessions, I strive to provide a space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions freely and at your own pace. I do not give advice or tell you what to do, but rather provide the space for you to determine your own way forward.

From this person-centred foundation, I will often integrate other therapeutic techniques, with your consent, tailored to your unique situation, preferences and needs.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT (pronounced ‘act’, as in ‘fact’) is an effective ‘therapeutic modality’ that is backed by extensive research. This approach helps you to accept things that are out of your control while committing to actions that enrich your life. Rather than struggling against distressing thoughts or feelings, ACT teaches you to acknowledge them without excessive engagement. It emphasizes mindfulness, helping you to live in accordance with your values and develop psychological flexibility. This method supports you in creating a life that is rich, full, and meaningful, aligning with what is most important to you.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Another therapeutic modality that I often integrate is CBT. CBT is founded on the interconnectedness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It assists you in identifying and modifying negative thought patterns to foster more realistic and productive thinking. This therapy is evidence-based and practical, providing strategies for you to challenge dysfunctional beliefs and experiment with new behaviours. CBT equips you with skills to effectively manage your challenges by altering the way you think and behave.

At Branch of Hope, integrative therapy means combining effective, evidence-based approaches to create a treatment plan that is as individual as you are. I blend the empowering, person-centred foundation with the practical tools of CBT and the adaptive strategies of ACT to offer a comprehensive, flexible approach to therapy. You always remain in control of your therapeutic journey, with our sessions guided by your unique needs, preferences and goals. I invite you to join me at Branch of Hope if this approach resonates with you. Find hope for a brighter future. I would be honoured to work with you.
